Andrew has been tying for some 35 or so years, much of that time in-hand without the aid of a vise. The first fly he tied was done in hand, with a bait hook, probably a #6 or #8, using gray mallard for tail. It was then palmered, with a second one up front as hackle. The tying thread was smuggled out from his mother's sewing stuff. The fly was stolen from him almost before the cement had dried, and so he figured, if it was that good, he must be on to something and made more.

I have fished streamers ever since the first vacation we took to Mooselookmeguntic Lake in Rangeley Maine back in the mid 70's. I love their style and their histories . As a fly tyer thats only happened a few years ago. I will tie the well known classics, but I like to tie my own, with a lot of colors, "attractors" I guess. Danish angler Claus Eriksen is the managing director of the Danish fishing shop Go Fishing. Claus has been fishing for many years, and has been influential in the Danish sea trout fishing community, contributing to many magazines, books and videos and originating many fly patterns for Danish sea trout, among them the (in)famous Pink Pig - Pattegrisen.

I have been fly fishing and tying flies for 60 years. My journeys included trout, salmon, and saltwater adventures in Canada, Costa Rica, and principally the United States. I have witnessed dramatic changes in the environment, fishery, and fly fishing technology over these 6 decades but still am drawn to flyrod challenges. Proudly my grand children are now students and advocates of the sport.

If you're a regular on The Global FlyFisher, you may have noticed that the publishing pace on GFF goes up and down. We aim at publishing a new piece every few days, but producing good material is time consuming and requires creativity and good, original ideas. While we have lots of ideas, we lack the time and resources to write all the articles ourselves.

Tying has become as much a passion for Dutch Martin Westbeek as fishing, and Martin is a regular tyer at shows and fairs in Holland, Germany, Denmark and Britain, and also tied in the USA.

Michael Smith is a computer security geek living in the Washington, DC area. During the work day, he designs security monitoring systems. By night and weekends, he aspires to catch every fish within 200 miles of "The Beltway".

I consider my home waters the New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts coast where I pursue striped bass, bluefish, bonito and false albacore until the dead of winter. I tie commercially and fish constantly.

Poul Jorgensen is probably among the best known fly tyers in the world, mostly because of his work with classic salmon flies. He is mentioned by many other well known salmon fly tyers as one of their prime inspirators and has been the spark that ignited many a salmon fly tyers career. Claus Bech-Petersen is a Danish fly fisher in his mid 30's. He describes himself as being a fly fisher by dedication and a journalist by profession. He has fished with a fly for trout almost since he could walk, but notices his own increasing interest for catching new kinds of fish and fast tropical fish on the fly rod.

Hans Weilenmann is a well known Dutch fly fisherman and fly tyer on the international arena. His name keeps on popping up in all kinds of connections - including many shows all over Europe and the U.S.A.

Henk Verhaar was born in 1960, into a non-fishing family.

He was trained as a chemist and currently works as an environmental toxicology researcher at Utrecht University.

Preben's influence on Danish flyfishing and flytying cannot be overestimated. He was indeed the Grand old Man amongst Danish fly anglers. We are honered that he wanted to contribute to this site.

Roddy MacLeod hails from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where he's been a lifelong resident. Husband and father of two (Katie and Donald) he finds rare moments for fishing.

I received a mail from Roman, who's based in Alberta Canada, in December 1998. He wrote:

Soeren Glerup is a member of the obviously very active group of fishers in Aalestrup Lystfiskerklub/Forening. He is also a member of Nordisk Fluefisker Raad in Danmark - the Danish branch of the Nordic Fly Fishers Council.

Soerens first submission is about George F.Grant's very beautiful and special flies - flies that I have also seen by Steven Fernandez. The pattern contains two radically different tying techniques.

There is a story behind "The Garage". Not too long ago my wife and I were renting a two story house that had a tiny little room upstairs with no closet. Since we already had a spare bedroom for family visitors, this room was quickly claimed as the "Sports Room".

Late Dave Lewis was a master rod builder. We still host a few of his online articles.

When I'm not working it is quite often because I have gone flyfishing, which I have been doing since my teens, more or less.

A matter of the gravest importance

German Sven Ostermann is one of a very few FFF-Certified Flycasting Instructors in Europe.

Hanafi Saleh is another of those Dutchmen that seem so abundant on the fly tying and fly fishing scene. And I say that with envy. Denmark is close to the same size as Holland, but still doesn't seem to have half the number of fly tyers and fly fishers.

Charles Garwood is an active tyer and fly fisher living in North Carolina, USA. He has submitted a set of convincing nymph and scud patterns. A similar convincing set of bass foam patterns from Charlie's hands will follow soon.

Chris Helm is one of the world's premier capacities on tying with hair - especially deer hair. Chris has tied on numerous shows and classes all over the world and has taught people to tie deer hair flies both live, in books, and on videos.

Roman Moser is probably one of the best known central European fly tyers and fly fishers. He has made his home river the Traun in Austria famous all over the world through his videos and his company the former Traun River Products - now called Roman Moser Innovative Flyfishing Products.

It's a great honor to have Bas a s a writer here. For as it will be obvious from his biography below, he is a very respected and active fly tyer on the international scene. Bas ties flies professionally, although he most certainly cannot make a living from it.
